Newark's Muslim community held a rally this afternoon, saying it wanted to show the public victims of the NYPD surveillance operation.
Nadia Kahf and other Muslim leaders say they are disgusted with the NYPD over surveillance of communities in both Newark and Paterson.
According to a recently uncovered 2007 NYPD report, the monitoring was done in every Muslim neighborhood and business in the area. Rutgers Newark campus' Muslim student organizations were also watched.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has defended the surveillance, saying there was good reason for his officers to investigate Muslims in New Jersey.
"Everything the New York City Police Department has done is legal," Bloomberg said. "It is appropriate. It is constitutional. They are permitted to travel beyond the borders of New York City to investigate cases."
Bloomberg went on to state that after 9/11, he has an obligation to all Americans to be proactive.
