A fire broke out in a mini mall in Passaic County and heavily damaged at least one business.

The fire broke out at the Pompton Place shopping center on Hamburg Turnpike around 9 p.m. Thursday. The businesses in the shopping center include Chinese restaurant Golden Garden and the Rose Nails Salon next door.

Pompton Lakes Mayor Michael Serra said he’s unsure if anyone was in the buildings at the time of the fire or if the businesses plan to open back up.

Everything is boarded up today. There is a faint smell of smoke in the air, as well as soot and debris around the perimeter of the mini mall.

Questions remain as to how the fire started.

There are two businesses in this complex that are boarded up for the time being and one section to the left that was vacant. The fire department left for the time being, but there was a police presence.
