A one-day sale at a local gas station Saturday created lines so long some customers said it was a safety hazard.
As word spread that a Mount Olive gas station on Route 46 was offering gas for $2.43 a gallon -- compared to $3.13 and $3.19 at neighboring stations -- so many cars snaked along the road it became hazardous. A few customers said the experience reminded them of the 1970s, when gas shortages resulted in long lines and rationing. The station owner who ran the sale has the right to price at his discretion. When the market?s good he said he prices gas down.
Though the sale lasted only a day, it was enough to get some thinking about price discrepancies. One customer said he wants the governor to investigate gas gouging. Analysts predict drivers might catch a break this Labor day because of the tame hurricane season and continued drop in demand.
