Newark authorities are searching for a man they say gunned down a mother of six and wounded one of her teenage sons Thursday.

According to police, Linda Carmichael was walking home from a store with two of her sons when an unknown gunman approached them and opened fire. Carmichael was shot in the torso and later died at University Hospital. Her 13-year-old son was shot in the hand and torso and is listed in fair condition.

Although it?s not clear what sparked the shooting, authorities say Carmichael?s 18-year-old son, who escaped unharmed, told police he was the intended target.
