(06/16/06) PERTH AMBOY ? Police say a woman jumped from a Perth Amboy bridge Friday with her daughter in her arms, killing the child in the process.
A city spokesperson says the two individuals were pulled from the Raritan River by rescuers. Although police are still investigating, they believe the incident took place at about 11:30. Police stopped traffic on Victory Bridge and cordoned off a white vehicle parked in the right lane near the edge of the bridge.
The woman, identified as 26-year-old Jerlisa Contreras, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick. The 18-month-old child, named Alyssa Nadine Scott, was pronounced dead at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy. A relative says Contreras was upset over relationship issues. Contreras has another child, an 8-year-old boy, who was with relatives at the time of the incident.
