With the FIFA World Cup approaching, New Jersey is preparing to host not just matches, but entire national teams.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced that Morocco’s national team will establish its training base at The Pingry School in Basking Ridge for the duration of the 2026 tournament.
“New Jersey is thrilled to welcome Morocco, and the rest of the world, to our state for the FIFA World Cup,” Sherrill said. “It is a true testament to New Jersey’s exciting role at the center of the World Cup.”
New Jersey is home to nearly 10,000 residents of Moroccan descent, according to the governor’s office.
Youssef Amrani, Moroccan ambassador to the United States, attended the announcement with a message of football and unity.
“Football is connecting people together,” Amrani said. “The interaction is very important to know each other, to solve ongoing conflicts in this complicated world. And football makes this happen.”
The Pingry School’s Miller Bugliari ’52 World Cup Field has a history of hosting elite teams. It served as a training site during the 1994 World Cup and was recently renovated with international standard pitches and upgraded facilities designed for top level competition.
Gov. Sherill also announced that three additional international teams will base operations in New Jersey, Brazil will train at Columbia Park in Morris Township, Senegal at Rutgers University in Piscataway, and Haiti at Stockton University in Galloway Township.
Morocco is scheduled to play Brazil in a marquee group stage matchup at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on June 13.
