The Montvale community is mourning the loss of two teenagers who were struck and killed by lightning while playing soccer Saturday.
Authorities say four teens were playing behind Memorial Elementary School when they saw lightning strike nearby. They decided to pack it in, but 19-year-old Lee Weisbrod, of River Vale, and 18-year-old Steven Fagan, of Woodcliff Lake, were struck and killed while walking off the field. Overnight, virtual memorials for Weisbrod and Fagan popped up on the Internet. Mourners also made makeshift memorials at the site. Mike Greco describes Fagan as a good friend and a leader. Greco learned of the death when his father, who is a rescue worker, got to the scene.
The other teens who were on the field ran ahead of Fagan and Weisbrod. Officials believe that may have saved their lives.
