Election Day is over, but the Monmouth County freeholder race remains a nail-biter.
There are up to 600 provisional ballots that will determine the winners of two freeholder seats. A freeholder is an elected official who sits on a board that makes decisions for the county.
Republican incumbent Robert Clifton and Democrat John D?amico appear to be ahead. However, GOP candidate Jeff Cantor is close behind. Democrat Stephen Schueler doesn?t have enough votes to stay in the race.
Superintendent of Elections John Bradshaw says workers will begin verifying votes after business hours and into the night. He hopes to have all the ballots verified by Friday afternoon, then the board of elections must count the votes.
