A mother and her 5-year-old twin sons are in extremely critical condition after a Trenton apartment fire Wednesday.

Fire officials say the fire started on the first floor of the Faircrest Avenue home. The three residents were on the second floor. Firefighters say they were probably trapped by the smoke and intense heat.

Firefighters say when they pulled the three from the home they had no pulse. They resuscitated the victims on the street before the mother and her sons were taken to the hospital.

The grandfather of the young boys came to the scene and was so overcome he had to be taken away in a stretcher. The mother was flown to Temple University Hospital. The twins were taken to Philadelphia?s Children?s Hospital.

The cause of the fire, which was contained to the one apartment, is under investigation.
