A man from Middletown Township drowned in the Ortley Beach section of Toms River Wednesday.
Seaside Heights Beach Patrol responded to calls for help on a Jet Ski and multiple first responding agencies tried to save the 46-year-old’s life. Despite their efforts, he died after being taken to a hospital.
This follows two other drownings over the past week. Last Thursday, a man drowned off Ocean City. Another person died while swimming in Loveladies LBI.
Lifeguards say September can be a dangerous month at beaches because most are unguarded while the weather and water temperatures remain warm.
Dozens of rescues occurred last week as powerful swells from Hurricane Earl churned up the ocean.
