It’s a done deal in Middletown, as officials move forward with plans to raise the tax levy to save three schools that were in danger of closing.
All but two board members voted to approve a revised proposal that promises to keep several Middletown schools open. Residents will have to dig a little deeper into their pockets.
The meeting started with public comments before some contentious moments between board members and the audience - and even among board members. The board voted on a proposed tax increase of 5.88% that would help keep three of the townships' schools open through the end of this school year.
The original motion was amended from a tax increase of 5.88% to an increase of up to 10.1% which would help bridge shortfalls for subsequent years.
Middletown Mayor Tony Perry announced a plan last week to save Leonardo and Navesink Elementary schools, as well as Bayshore Middle School.
Because of budget shortfalls, the board approved a tentative budget proposal last month, which included plans to close the two elementary schools and convert the middle school into a combined elementary school.
Board members will be voting on April 30 to approve the final budget for the next school year.
