Metuchen School District will be closing early on the first day of school for the second year in a row, due to an air conditioning issue.

The weather forecast calls for upwards of 90 degrees and high humidity today which made it imperative they leave before it gets too hot. All four schools in the district K-12 will go home for early dismissal today.

Most Metuchen schools are not air conditioned, according to the Mayor Jonathan Busch.

“Our schools don’t have air conditioning in the first place. This, among other reasons, is why they have started school earlier this year. The community passed three referenda two years ago to allow for construction that will, among many other things, bring air conditioning to all of our schools," said Mayor Busch.

Last year, schools in this district started a week later due to similar excessive heat in the classroom.
