The Rider University student who died after a binge drinking incident was memorialized Saturday at a ceremony that drew his close friends and fraternity brothers.Throngs gathered to remember Gary DeVercelly, an 18-year-old freshman from California who died of alcohol poisoning after drinking at a fraternity party. Friends say DeVercelly consumed as much as a half a bottle of alcohol at the party. He was taken to the hospital where he slipped into a coma and later died.DeVercelly?s fraternity brothers filed into the memorial service to remember someone who they say will not easily be forgotten. Some students say underage drinking is not soley a problem in fraternity houses. Others say they are disappointed in the freshman?s friends, who they say should have cut off his drinking at a certain point. A flag at Rider University will remain at half-mast for the week in honor of DeVercelly. The Mercer County Prosecutor?s Office is looking into whether they will charge anyone in DeVercelly?s death.
