There were some tense moments in Passaic Wednesday evening as police officers and a suspect exchanged gunfire.

Passaic Mayor Hector Lora tells News 12 New Jersey that just before 6:30 p.m. police received reports of a man shooting a gun in the area of Passaic Avenue and Lackawanna Place near the train station.

When officers arrived, they exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

Neighbors tell News 12 that they heard about four to six gunshots.

The suspect was placed into custody and taken to the hospital. Details on the suspect’s injuries were not immediately made clear.

Lora says that no police officer or civilian was hurt and stressed that the neighborhood is now safe.

He says that the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General are involved in the investigation.
