An overnight fire in an apartment building in Passaic has displaced 67 people – including 15 children.
The building is located on Madison Street. Officials say the fire started on the first floor and quickly spread to the entire building. Part of the roof collapsed into the third floor.
Mayor Hector Lora says that three people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. All are expected to be OK.
"They contained the fire to one structure - 12 units…But it's right across from a senior building where seniors were exposed to smoke. It was right across from one of our biggest schools - in one of most densely populated areas of the city, so very challenging,” he said.
The mayor says that most of the residents do not have renters insurance and lost everything.
The American Red Cross has set up a shelter while those who are displaced look for permanent housing.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
