Mayor de Blasio, Office of Emergency Management prepare locals for hurricane season
Hurricane season started Friday in New York City, and officials were in Red Hook to discuss what to do in the event of another major storm.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and officials from the Office of Emergency Management visited the Red Hook Initiative, a nonprofit committed to community development in Red Hook.
They mentioned that residents should know their zones and whether they need to evacuate in the event of an emergency. They also said that New Yorkers should make a plan and know the hazards that come with hurricanes.
Officials also gave out go-bags with emergency supplies inside like water, flashlights and first-aid kits.
Red Hook was hit especially hard by Superstorm Sandy, with over 6 feet of water in some areas.
October will mark two years since the storm hit.
