A South Carolina man was arrested after he was seen on camera grabbing cash from a lemonade stand run by neighborhood children in Hasbrouck Heights on Wednesday.
Police were notified of the theft after receiving a 911 call stating that the suspect — later identified as Chapel D. Lighty, 35, of Bishopville, South Carolina — had grabbed a plastic container filled with cash and fled the area.
Officers responded to the location and obtained video footage from a local business.
“The adult male is observed walking south on the Boulevard when he grabs the entire plastic container containing approximately $50 in cash and fled the area,” police said in a statement.
Police from Hasbrouck Heights and nearby Wood-Ridge responded. About 20 minutes after the incident, Lighty was found sitting on a bench in Woodland Park, police said.
Police said he was in possession of the cash stolen from the lemonade stand, as well as the container. Police also learned that Lighty had an active warrant for an unrelated offense in Garfield.
The suspect was arrested and transported to the Bergen County Jail.
