A man who admitted to sexually assaulting and killing his 11-year-old neighbor has been sentenced to life in prison.
Andreas Erazo, 20, pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated sexual assault in February, days before he was to go on trial for the 2017 killing of Abbiegail Smith in Keansburg.
Smith's body was found on a roof near the apartment building where she and Erazo lived. Erazo initially claimed he stabbed the girl because he thought she was an intruder. He later conceded that was false and confessed to raping and killing her. Monmouth County prosecutors called it one of the most disturbing crimes that they have ever encountered.
Judge David Bauman refuted the defense's argument that Erazo's age and upbringing deserved a lighter sentence.
“Her hands and feet bound by a cord on the roof of a shed directly under the defendant's bedroom, discarded like someone's refuse,” Bauman said.
Smith’s mother Carol Bennet says that Erazo has never once apologized to her or her family. She spoke with the media after the sentencing. She said that not even torture of death will be enough justice for Erazo.
"Only God sees and knows what he did to this innocent 11-year-old child. She didn't deserve this type of death, in fact, no one deserves to die like this,” Bennet said. “I'm just leaving Andreas Erazo in the hands of God because Abbie is now with God, while he surely will be with the devil."
Erazo will not be eligible for parole for 63 years. He will then be 83 years old.
