A man was shot this afternoon outside the Dr. MLK Jr. School on the 200-block of South Eighth Street.
Newark police responded to the scene at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday after receiving calls about gunfire in the area.
When they arrived, they found a man in his late-20s with gunshot wounds to his neck and arm. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
Children were outside playing on the playground at the time of the shooting. Witnesses say that teachers hurriedly brought them back inside and immediately alerted parents to come get their children. The school was briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Parents tell News 12 New Jersey that this is the second time the school has been placed on lockdown this school year, and the fourth time in 2015.
The Dr. MLK Jr. School, also known as the 13th Avenue School, is an elementary school.
No children were hurt during the shooting.
