A manhunt is underway for the person responsible for shooting a Jersey City man eight times inside a park.
The shooting happened Monday night just after 11:30 p.m. at Ercel Webb Park across from an elementary school. Jersey City police say a 22-year-old man was shot.
The shooter apparently came up behind the victim and fired multiple shots before fleeing down Manning Avenue.
Tajaira Delacruz says she heard the shots from her apartment that overlooks the park. Her son was sleeping in the next room.
"I was scared in the living room. I was like 'what if one of those shots hit my son or me?'" she says.
Hours after the shooting, Ercel Webb Park was filled with children. Many parents who spoke to News 12 New Jersey say they have always felt the area was safe.
"If it wasn't, I wouldn't let [my grandchildren] play there," says Bernice Smith.
The 22-year-old victim was taken to Jersey City Medical Center. He is recovering in the intensive care unit.
Anyone who might have any information on the shooting is urged to call Jersey City Police at 201-547-5245.
