A man was fatally wounded Tuesday evening during a police-involved shooting in Newark, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray announced early Wednesday morning.
Murray said the shooting occurred around 9:15 p.m. in the area of South Orange Avenue and South 20th Street. There are no police injuries.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said detectives were investigating shootings and robberies in the area when they approached a car.
As the detectives were approaching, they saw that one of the car’s occupants was armed with a gun, Ambrose said. He said a detective fired his weapon, striking the armed man after which the man’s weapon was recovered.
No additional details were immediately available. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
