Fire consumed a Wallington house Sunday, killing a man as another family was plucked from the roof to safety.
Authorities found the body of 58-year-old Richard Golarzyk in his bed on the first floor. Firefighters believe the victim died in his sleep. Officials say his wife was not home during the fire. Neighbors say the flames never rose above the first floor, but the smoke quickly spread.
A woman, her husband and their 6-year-old son who live on the second floor of the house heard smoke alarms and rushed to the roof where they waited for help. A woman who lives nearby says she called her husband and son, who is a police officer, to help. They rushed to the house with a ladder and were able to save that family.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
