A man who was detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has died at Delaney Hall in Newark.
Jean Wilson Brutus, 41, died from natural causes, according to a statement by ICE officials.
Officials say EMS performed life-saving measures and transported Brutus to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Sen. Cory Booker is speaking out about the death.
“For months, I have condemned the inhumane conditions at Delaney Hall…because [of those conditions] I oppose private detention centers in any form,” Booker wrote.
ICE officials said Brutus was previously being held at the Union County Jail before being transferred to Delaney Hall. They said he “had no signs of distress during intake nor a medical history of cardiovascular issues” when he arrived.
