Police arrested the live-in boyfriend of a woman whose 10-month-old daughter, Victoria Madison, died in Newark on Cutler Street Friday.
Everett Sheppard, 22, was taken into custody late Friday night in connection with the infant?s death, though he was not charged with murder. Sheppard does face a number of other charges, including sexual assault. It is unclear if the assault charge led to the death of the baby, but police say an autopsy could reveal answers.
The baby?s mother, 19-year-old Sheila Troutman, was brought in for questioning, but not arrested.
Police responded to a call of a child in cardiac arrest at around 1 p.m. on Friday. The baby girl was taken to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to police, there were signs of foul play at the residence. Neighbors say the girl was taken to a hospital Thursday night but returned home Friday.
The baby?s 2-year-old brother was taken away by the Division of Youth and Family Services and is said to be in good physical condition.
