Mahwah man charged with assaulting landscaping couple after dispute, police say
Police say the suspect allegedly choked a 78-year-old man and assaulted his wife before turning himself in later that day.

A Mahwah man has been charged after police say he assaulted an elderly landscaping couple following a dispute outside his home.
Mahwah police responded to Glasgow Terrace around 8:40 a.m. on June 25 for a report of a dispute in progress. When officers arrived, the suspect had already fled the scene.
According to police, a 78-year-old man and his 68-year-old wife were driving a landscaping vehicle when they stopped for a school bus with its lights activated. Police said an unknown man approached the vehicle, yelling at the couple for stopping in front of his house.
After the school bus left, the couple continued to their job site. Police said the same man later approached the woman in what was described as a threatening manner. When her husband intervened, the suspect allegedly threw the 78-year-old man to the ground, kicked him and placed both hands around his neck, choking him.
Police said the man's wife tried to help, but the suspect allegedly struck her several times and threw her to the ground before fleeing.
Investigators identified the suspect as 45-year-old Aston Hamilton, of Mahwah. After attempts to locate him were unsuccessful, police said they obtained a warrant charging him with aggravated assault by strangulation and simple assault.
Hamilton turned himself in at Mahwah Police Headquarters later that night. He was processed and taken to the Bergen County Jail pending a court hearing.
