May is Celiac Awareness Month, and one Long Island woman is turning her own diagnosis into a safe space for others across the Long Island.

The Gluten Free Treat Shop on Broadway in Massapequa is a fully gluten-free bakery serving everything from sprinkle cookies to black and whites. Owner Jenna Vanacore opened the shop seven months ago after years of baking from home. She was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2014 and says it was difficult to find gluten-free desserts that actually tasted good.

Vanacore taught herself how to bake by watching online tutorials and eventually built an Etsy business before opening her storefront in Massapequa. Now, she’s even teaching customers how to decorate some of the bakery’s most popular cookies.

With help from family and friends, Vanacore says the business continues to grow, with custom orders and customers of all ages excited to finally have a place where they can safely enjoy sweets again.
