Thanks for joining us here on mornings on news 12 on a Friday, December 1st. I'm m mad and I'm Simon Choudry. So we've been talking about the rain. Will it affect our weekend plans? Let's check in with storm watch team. Meteorologist, Alex Calam. Not a bad start to December temperature wise though. Now it's true. It is cold out there this morning in the mid twenties for North Jersey, interior parts of the state only in the twenties, but we are all warming up very quickly. I want to take you to one of the cooler spots. Somerset County is sitting in the mid twenties right now. At Best Rocky Hill is 30. So you definitely need to jack it early but you don't get by mid morning, at least not the heavy jacket. You're sitting in the mid forties. The wind is very calm today but clouds are building and we have a chance for rain. It is after all the first day of December and on average temperatures are right around 49. So this is just about right for this time of the year. But by the end of the month, we go down to 41 for your average morning temperature on average by the end of the month, 28. And yeah, December typically is when we see our first snow of the season last year though. We didn't see our first inch of snow until February this weekend. We're just talking plain old rain and there could be plenty of it on Sunday. Saturday looks dry and cloudy and mild coming up. We'll show you what those numbers look like. Alex. this memorial day weekend. We're taking a road trip to learn some military history. Were visiting the Millville Army Airfield Museum in Cumberland County as news 12. Photojournalist mike roberts shows us many World War two pilots got their training right here in New Jersey In August of 1941. This was dedicated as the first America's Air Defense airplane. And what happened? We trained pilots and they came here and learned gunnery. The P 47 Thunderbolt actually went through here. They did ground gunnery training. The P 40 Warhawk was first, but then the Thunderbolt, which we are known for is um, you know, our claim to fame as we should say it at our 1500 pilots. Unfortunately, 14 lost their lives Back in November. I volunteer for their special project and that is to get in contact with any family members of these 14 pilots who perished in training here between 1942 and 45. They fought for this country and something that they very much believed in. Unfortunately we're losing most of our veterans from the Second World War. They're no longer here and we encourage to get these people in to get interviewed And to donate stuff so we can put it in here. What is so nice is when we do bring in the donation, we actually ask the person who donates it for a picture that either goes with the uniform or goes with the artifact. Never knew anything about before. 42nd. Go for broke the purple heart battalion. I come here and I start reading the name. I knew 90% of these families. I played football with him. I played baseball with them in high school. So we'd like to make each story personal and that's why we're so unique. This is the link trainer building. This building was built to train pilots and instrument flying and the early 40s when the airport was functioning your loose all the work in here to do this is done by volunteers. Well the mud, it stands for military utility transport truck. It had been disassembled so we put it back together. I think we spent somewhere close to seven months working on this. This is a nose section of a C 47 troop transport plane and the reason why I got involved with this restoration and as a volunteer, my father flew 21 combat missions As a pilot in the C- 47 during World War II in the European Theatre, basically. Ever since I learned how to read, I've been reading and studying world war. So when I retired, you know, it made perfect sense to come over here. There's so much stuff in here, Not just from World War Two but from what is going on in our world today. I walk around and I see I find something new each time and I've been doing this for over a couple of years. The Milledgeville Army Airfield Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and if you're looking for more fun things to do around the tristate. Just watch road trip close to home tonight at seven PM.
