Rep. Chris Smith announced plans for new federal legislation that would give local law enforcement more resources and authority to figure out who is behind the mysterious drones in the night sky.
For several weeks, the Ocean County Sheriff's Office has been working in Seaside Heights to photograph and gather details about the drones being seen in South Jersey. But there is only so much they and other agencies across the state can do.
"The state police would get the empowerment to really have what Homeland Security should have, but [the Department of Defense] does have the ability to track and bring down one of these drones. Local law enforcement would get more training,” said Rep. Smith during a news conference on Saturday. “More resources will be given to local law enforcement because this is a threat. Think of it as trespassing from the air."
The Monmouth County Sheriff's Department says if you see a drone, report it to your local police department on their non-emergency line. They ask that people download the Air Aware and Flight Radar 24 app to make sure the sighting is not an airplane.
