Lawmakers announce changes to Paterson flood maps
Lawmakers announced some changes to the flood maps in Paterson during a news conference Monday.
The new maps restructure the flood zones so residents who don’t live close to the Passaic River won’t have to pay costly flood insurance if they live in areas that don’t flood.
The area near 21st and 22nd avenues was part of a designated flood zone even though those streets are far away from the river.
Rep. Bill Pascrell and others had been lobbying for the revisions.
“As we can see with the new maps today, flood maps are crucial to homeowners to determine if their homes are at risk of flooding or need insurance,” the congressman said.
Pascrell says that the federal government used outdated information when it created the previous flood maps.
