Tenants of a luxury building in Jersey City say a 40,000-gallon water tank burst and flooded the apartments below.
Modera Lofts tenants shared videos exclusively with News 12 New Jersey that shows water gushing from the ceilings and filling the halls of the building.
The tank burst just after midnight on Friday and mostly affected the west wing of the eight-story building. Tenants were evacuated and some stayed in nearby hotels until about Tuesday.
News 12 was told that apartments on the sixth, seventh and eighth floors had the most damage. Tenants tell News 12 that Mill Creek Residential, the company that manages the building, has gone back on promises.
They say that the company first promised to cover accommodations but is now possibly withholding information regarding mold clearance. They say that they are now worried about their health.
“What was a trickle in the bathroom became a flood…There’s issues with mold, there’s issues with people being told it’s safe to come back, when in fact they look and can see it’s not,” says Danielle Von Lehman, who lives on the sixth floor.
“The mold has started developing and you can feel the smells are super musty,” says seventh-floor tenant Helen Izbor. “I went downstairs to the management three times yesterday, twice today and asked them to give me it in writing that there’s no mold and we’re clear...and nothing is happening.”
News 12 did see a large cleaning crew leaving the building. Tenants say the crew has been running dehumidifiers ever since the tank burst.
News 12 reached out to Mill Creek Residential but has yet to hear back.
