A large water main break caused flooding and shut down roads in Hoboken Monday afternoon.
The break happened near Newark and Jefferson streets around 2:30 p.m.
Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla says that a 12-inch water main broke at the intersection, causing the roadway to buckle in multiple spots. Newark and Jefferson streets are expected to remain closed for several days for repairs.
“We’ll have the police department managing traffic to make sure there is a steady flow in and out and to ensure the least disruption possible,” Bhalla says.
A building with about 50 families inside lost water pressure due to the break.
“Two kids at home…so it’s been difficult,” says resident Divya Hardiva. “Happens every year…not fun, but we live with it.”
SUEZ Water officials are providing the residents with bottled water. But Bhalla says that the residents who do have water can rest assured that it is safe to drink. There are no boil water advisories in effect.
