Police tweeted the fire was at Airport Road and Cedarbridge Avenue, but other towns became affected as well - including closures in Brick along Route 70. One westbound lane remained shut down late Sunday.
Route 528 was also closed off earlier but has since reopened.
The thick plumes of smoke could be seen for miles as crews worked on the ground and by air to get the fire under control.
Officials say the fire was 40% contained as of 10 p.m.
They say one firefighter was injured, but he is in stable condition.
"This fire jumped up really quick and went because we are really dry right now and there's high way," said Ray Bukowski, DEP assistant commissioner of Natural and Historic Resources.
