A 19-year-old girl who was hit by a school bus in Lakewood has died, according to her family.
Family members identified the girl as Angeles Nieto Gonzales, a recent high school graduate.
The 19-year-old was struck by the bus while riding a scooter in the area of West County Line Road near Hope Chapel Road, according to Lakewood police.
She was taken to the hospital with a head injury following the crash.
Her loved ones told News 12 she died on Friday.
Neighbor Betty Salvatore recalled the aftermath of the accident.
"I saw a police car here with the flashing lights, and I knew something was going on. It's usually an accident at that corner, but when I walked up, I saw the school bus," Salvatore said. "At first, I thought it just broke down, but then I saw the amount of cars, and I knew it had to be something else."
There has been an outpouring of support on social media from those that knew Gonzales. Several people wrote posts with phrases like "Justice for Angie."
Police said additional information into the investigation will be released when it becomes available available.
Residents who live in the area where the crash happened told News 12 it's not uncommon to see accidents there.
"It's a dangerous area. There are a lot of accidents there. So, I worry about all the kids that are on their scooters and e-bikes," Salvatore said.
"Daily, probably at least once a week in Lakewood over here at this intersection, Hope Chapel and County Line...it's been like this for many years," Nissim Berdugo, a lifelong Lakewood resident said. "It's a busy town. It's a city, and there's a lot of cars. So, this is a busy intersection."
