Kwanzaa began on Friday, marking a celebration of African American heritage and culture.

The holiday started nearly 60 years ago.

Seven candles are lit each night of the weeklong celebration to highlight seven principles, including unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.

On New Year’s Eve, those who participate will take part in a feast.
