The New York Knicks are NBA champions for the first time since 1973, sparking celebrations across New York City and emotional reactions from fans in the Bronx who say the moment feels both historic and deeply personal.

"Congratulations to the New York Knicks,” one fan said.

“We on the map now,” another added.

This championship is hitting New Yorkers at different points in their lives, turning a long-awaited title into something deeply personal.

Fans in the Bronx described on Sunday how the championship aligned with major life moments.

“Yesterday was my birthday and they won yesterday June 13, they won for my birthday. That’s what I wanted for my birthday,” said Luis Ramirez.

“The last championship was when I graduated from high school so that tells you how old I am, soI’m really excited,” said Mary Randolph.

“I was at prom, game four, it was great I loved it...Brunson hit the three, OG made the comeback, I loved it,” said high school student Kenneth White.

The Knicks’ run also brought back memories of past playoff heartbreak, including the 2021 postseason when the Knicks faced the Atlanta Hawks. Derrick Rose played a key role for New York during that stretch, while Trae Young helped lead Atlanta to the series win.

“It’s unfortunate we lost that series. I know we were favored but same time it was the stepping stone we needed to get to where we are today,” said Angel Avila, of Highbridge.

“It’s been a fun ride...makes this all that much better because of all that losing,” another fan said.

Fans also reflected on Knicks players past and present who helped sustain hope through years of rebuilding and near misses.

“Shoutout Carmelo Anthony, Patrick Ewing, Bernard King, John Starks, Charles Oakley,” one fan added.

“Shoutout Langston Galloway, shoutout Aaron Afflalo, Mindaugas Kuzminskas, Ron Baker, Willy Hernangomez,” another fan added.

Fans said they are now looking ahead to the championship parade scheduled for Thursday as celebrations continue across the city.
