Voters across New York City headed to the polls on Tuesday to participate in a series of closely-watched Democratic congressional primaries that could help shape the party’s direction in several heavily blue districts.
In Lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, Rep. Dan Goldman is facing one of the toughest challenges of his career in the 10th Congressional District. The two-term incumbent is competing in a crowded field that includes former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander. The race has emerged as a key test of competing visions within the Democratic Party in a district reshaped by redistricting.
In Brooklyn’s 7th Congressional District, an open seat has drawn significant attention following the retirement of longtime Rep. Nydia Velázquez. Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, City Councilmember Julie Won and Assemblymember Claire Valdez are among the candidates in a competitive three-way primary, with the outcome expected to signal the political direction of the district.
Further north, in the 13th Congressional District covering Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, Rep. Adriano Espaillat is facing a primary challenge from Darializa Avila Chevalier, a public defense investigator and community organizer. Espaillat has secured backing from several prominent Democrats and major labor groups, while Avila Chevalier is aiming to consolidate progressive support, including an endorsement from Mayor Mamdani.
In the Bronx’s 15th Congressional District, Rep. Ritchie Torres is seeking reelection while facing challengers that include former Assemblymember Michael Blake and community activist Jose Vega. The outcome of the race could provide insight into where Democratic voters in the Bronx stand on a range of local and national issues.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has endorsed eight candidates in congressional and state legislative races this cycle, adding another layer of interest as results begin to come in Tuesday night.
