New Jersey bid farewell to summer 2008 Sunday as temperatures lingered in the low 80s.
Belmar Beach was crowded with beachgoers, and many who flocked to the shore could be found bobbing on surfboards, dining alfresco or picnicking. A skeleton crew of lifeguards remained on duty.
But others declared the season over and opted instead to turn their attention indoors, specifically to big screen TVs broadcasting football.
Local bartenders anticipated crowds later in the evening, saying summer crowds are milking the good weather for all it is worth.
Sue Klinger, of Wall Township, says she remembers one summer a few years ago when she was able to hit the beach until October, right before Halloween.
