It was on June 28, 1778, that Mary Hays, otherwise known as “Molly Pitcher” assisted Colonial troops at the Battle of Monmouth. There is much that is still unknown about Hays’s role. But she was apparently bringing water to troops when her husband collapsed on the battlefield. Legend says that she loaded up a cannon and help lead the Americans to victory against the British.
