It was 95 years ago to the day that a major expedition took off in Lakehurst.
The Graf Zeppelin, a German blimp, left New Jersey on Aug. 8, 1929, to make history. People paid about $3,000 to be a passenger. The blimp flew through Europe and Asia and then back to Lakehurst exactly three weeks later.
It was the fastest circumnavigation of the world at the time. Blimp travel would end a few years later because of the Hindenburg explosion.
