Jersey City police are asking for the public's help after a man reportedly approached a home carrying a large knife, possibly a machete or saw.

According to a police alert, approximately five men were seen knocking on doors in the area of Harrison Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Sept. 16. They were reportedly operating a white pickup truck of unknown make and model.

Police said one man approached a home carrying the large blade while another remained outside the gate.

After no one answered the front door, both men walked around the front of the home, appearing to look for another way inside, police said.

The men fled when the resident's dog began barking.

Police released a surveillance image in connection with the incident and are asking residents to remain alert for suspicious activity involving the pictured man or a white pickup truck.
