Large Jersey City fire leaves 2 people critical, 2 firefighters hospitalized

The American Red Cross helped families and gave out blankets to those affected.

A large fire damaged multiple homes on Garfield Avenue in Jersey City Thursday morning, according to authorities.
A lot of smoke filled homes, and flames were strong in the back of homes, according to neighbors. Many people evacuated their homes because smoke alarms went off.
A firefighter saved a family’s dog, and resident named Patrick gave CPR to his cat to rescue him.
Some residents started returning to their homes after the fire was put out.
The American Red Cross helped families and gave out blankets to those affected.
Officials say at least two people are in critical condition, one suffering from serious injuries. In addition, two firefighters were injured and hospitalized, one for burns to the face and the second with a back injury. One of those firefighters had to enter a home and save people while they were sleeping, authorities said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
