(05/22/06) JERSEY CITY ? Jersey City Mayor Jerry Healy unveiled a series of proposed measures Monday designed to stem the rising tide of gun violence in the city.
Healy hopes the three ordinances will prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands. The mayor wants to implement a limit in which a person can only purchase a gun once every six months. He also wants mandatory reporting of lost or stolen weapons within 48 hours. Finally, Healy wants to ban the sale of cheap guns known as ?Saturday Night Specials.?
The mayor says if approved, violators could face serious penalties. According to Healy, those who break the proposed laws could face fines of more than $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail. While Healy says 90-day jail sentences won?t likely be the norm, he wants people to know the option is on the table. The City Council plans on reviewing the measures Wednesday.
