City Council passed an aggressive law restricting where sex offenders can live Monday.
Under the law, sex offenders moving into Jersey City will not be permitted to live within 2,500 feet of a park, school, library or grocery store. The more than 300 sex offenders already living in the city are allowed to remain. While several other cities have passed similar restrictions, those places limited the sex offender zone to 1,000 feet.
Some critics believe the courts will take issue with the size of Jersey City's zone. They say sex offenders will not be able to live anywhere with a zone that big, therefore violating their civil rights. The law takes effect December 11.
