Jersey City officials have filed a lawsuit against the Christie administration in an attempt to block a proposed marina in Liberty State Park.
Texas marina company Suntex reached a lease agreement last week with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to build a marina.
The lawsuit is asking for a temporary restraining order to prevent the construction on the southern end of the park.
“This plan would destroy the park’s true purpose and spirit as a free park for a free people behind the world’s greatest symbol of freedom. The south side is the nation’s most sacred public space,” says Friends of Liberty State Park president Sam Pensin.
The south side of the park overlooks the Statue of Liberty.
Those opposed to the marina say that it will only benefit those who own boats and will drive out other people who want to use the park and nearby playgrounds.
Gov. Chris Christie’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
