This weekend is a holiday weekend and there's a great show in Newark for all the 80s and 90s kids.
A freestyle free-for-all is making its way to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and will feature a full ensemble of freestyle, pop and hip-hop artists. The show will be headlined by two-time Grammy-nominated singer, Taylor Dayne.
Taylor Dayne is an 80s icon with 17 top 20 singles. She's had three No. 1 songs, including her smash hit, "Tell it To My Heart."
New 12 New Jersey’s Rick Holmes spoke with Dayne earlier this week in Los Angeles, but this Long Islander is headed home to the East Coast on Saturday.
"I’m fortunate that my music kind of crosses over so many demographics and genres. It's amazing,” Dane said.
Dayne's life took a frightening turn when she was diagnosed with colon cancer last summer. Semi-annual screening caught it early, and Dayne says she was back on stage two months later.
"I urge people to get your colonoscopy, get tested,” she said.
Dayne's rough and ready voice led to stardom in the dance and pop genres, but she says she's a rocker at heart, hanging with 80s bands at the height of fame, including a certain Jersey supergroup.
"Then you had Bon Jovi. That was my wheelhouse. When we were making hit records, it was Jon and Richie and the band. That's a lot of New Jersey right there,” she said.
Dayne is bringing it back to the Garden State on Saturday and she will perform along with New Jersey's own Joe Zangie, George Lamond, Rob Base and Freedom Williams from C+C Music Factory.
