Jefferson Township Mayor Eric Wilsusen has declared a state of emergency over the closure of the Route 15 bridge.
The Department of Transportation has worked for months to replace the bridge near Cedar Terrace in Jefferson Township. It crosses over the Rockaway River.
DOT closed the bridge altogether during an inspection Tuesday due to it being structurally unsound and not safe for travel.
Wilsusen says Route 15 south is a main thruway for many people in the community looking to get on Interstate 80. He says now that the bridge is closed, it's causing major problems - not just for drivers - but for businesses on both sides of the closure.
The DOT has not given a time frame on when the bridge will reopen.
