Two earthquakes rumbled Tuesday night in Morris County.
"It sounded like I heard a big boom," says Curtis Green, of Rockaway.
The first quake struck a little after 5 p.m. The United States Geological Survey says that was a 2.3-magnitude earthquake just west of Morris Plains -- about 5 km deep.
A 1.7-magnitude aftershock then hit near Lake Telemark in Rockaway Township a few hours later. Residents reported hearing loud noises, saying their homes shook.
“It was extremely loud, like somethings collapsed or something,” says Veronica Skewes, of Jefferson. “I was in my home yes. I was actually upstairs, and I thought something happened downstairs.”
Most say they thought maybe there were some sort of military exercises taking place at nearby Picatinny Arsenal until they saw the earthquakes were confirmed.
There were no reports of any damage or injuries.
