Investigators are re-tracing the steps Thursday of an off-duty Jersey City police officer accused in a drunk driving crash.
Authorities want to know where Officer Kevin Freibott was and how much he may have had to drink before he was involved in an accident Tuesday night. The prosecutor believes excessive speed may have also been a factor in the crash. The crash occurred on Pulaski Skyway and critically injured Ruth Zelaya and her 2-year-old son, Jose Carlos.
Ruth?s husband says his wife is recovering at a Jersey City hospital, while their son is clinging to life at University Hospital in Newark. Meanwhile, Freibott, who is free on bail, is charged with drunk driving and two counts of assault by auto. Investigators are looking into information that Freibott called in sick Tuesday and may have attended a Knicks game in Manhattan.
Freibott has a checkered driving history that includes seven accidents, three license suspensions and multiple violations. While he was fired from the Middletown Police Department, he appealed and was rehired. He was transferred to the Jersey City department in 2005.
