and the Asbury Park Press are teaming up to take a closer look at Asbury Park's billion dollar effort to rebuild.
The city at one time was a popular destination for the rich and famous. Many historians say tourists and celebrities were attracted to Asbury Park?s plentiful entertainment and beautiful architecture.
However, time eventually took its toll on the area. Increasing crime rates, struggling schools and other problems common to urban areas eventually caused Asbury Park to lose its luster.
Now, efforts are underway that many people hope will transform Asbury Park into the pride of the Jersey Shore. Luxury condominiums and retail stores are in the process of being built on the city?s oceanfront. According to developers, success on the city?s waterfront will jump start the economy and improve conditions throughout the rest of Asbury Park.Videos:The redevelopment of Asbury Park: Part I The redevelopment of Asbury Park: Part II The redevelopment of Asbury Park: Part III The redevelopment of Asbury Park: Part IV The redevelopment of Asbury Park: Part V Related videoAdditional comments from historian Helen-Chantal Pike Additional comments from a developer involved in the project Additional comments from Asbury Park Police Director L.
