(02/07/06) SOMERSET ? An escaped Somerset County Jail inmate is back in police custody, but concerned residents want to know how he managed to flee in the first place.
Police caught up with maximum security inmate David McGill at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at his home in Somerville. McGill literally walked away from the Somerset County Jail Sunday night while taking out trash to dumpsters outside the facility?s fence. However, the News 12 New Jersey I-Team has learned that McGill should never have been chosen for trash detail.
Trash detail inmates must be located in minimum security, have no violent offenses and must be within 18 months of their release date. McGill is a maximum security inmate facing charges of robbery, sexual assault and weapons possession. Those living near the county jail want to know why a dangerous inmate was allowed to simply slip away into the night.
Somerset County Sheriff Frank Provenzano says the incident is under investigation.
